Nutritional counselling is a type of assessment made by a health professional who works with an individual to analyse their diet. The counsellor identifies where change is needed to improve the overall health of the client through diet and nutrition. It is an ongoing process where the nutritional counsellor provides education, information material, support and follow-ups. The nutritional counsellor helps people to set and maintain achievable health goals in regards to their dietary intake.

Nutrition is a significant part of a healthy lifestyle. Energy levels and health declines without proper nutrition, therefore making one susceptible to various health problems. Specialised information is given to the individual to fit their everyday lifestyle once the counsellor assesses current eating patterns of the person. The counsellor will identify situation that may lead to relapse and plan ways to prevent the situation from occurring.
The nutritional counsellor will work with the individual to set goals, maintain changes, assess body weight, identify changes needed and identify possible barriers stopping an individual to change.
